OperUs is delighted to announce our Opera Studio 2025: Alcina is currently open to applications! The Opera Studio will take place in the beautiful city of Trieste, Italy from June 20th-29th 2025.

 

Participation in the opera studio also includes a further 10 days of online preparation prior to arriving in-person in Trieste, during which the young artists will receive training in Italian language and diction, music branding and marketing, as well as support in preparing their roles. The time in Trieste will be dedicated to music rehearsals, masterclasses and staging the final performance.

We are thrilled to announce the star guest teacher for this year's exclusive cast masterclass: internationally acclaimed mezzosoprano Maite Beaumont!

This year we are pleased to welcome back expert pianist and coach Prof. Antonella Costantini, director Ilaria Zanetti, maestro repetiteur Corrado Gulin and OperUs manager-director, mezzo and arts manager Fiorenza Badila Costantini.

Alcina Album

Based on the merits of their performance and time at the opera studio, some cast members will additionally be chosen to participate in the future recording of OperUs' first fully-produced album - a recording of Händel's supernatural masterpiece, Alcina.

1) APPLICATION DETAILS

2) PROGRAM STRUCTURE

 

The program is 20 days long, 10 of which are held online and then 10 in person in Trieste, Italy.

10 days online preparation (language and diction classes, role preparation, career development and branding): June 2nd to 6th and June 9th to 13th 2025.

10 days in-person lessons, rehearsals, masterclass and performances: June 20th-29th 2025

June 20th: Welcome and music rehearsal

June 21st, 22nd, 23rd: Staging rehearsals/coachings

June 24th, 25th, 26th: Masterclass

June 27th: Dress-tech rehearsal

June 28th: Dress-tech rehearsal open to children

June 29th: Final performances

Places at the Opera Studio are divided into two groups:​​​​

Young Professionals’ Program:

For early-career singers, advanced students and those preparing to enter the industry - full study program, role preparation and tuition plus guaranteed participation in the masterclass and final performance in one of the two main casts.​​

Studio Artist Program:

For students of classical singing - intensive study program designed to hone technique and allow for in-depth role preparation - studio artists receive the same tuition, coachings, role study, language classes etc as Young Professionals. Studio artists will attend the masterclass as auditors, shadow main cast rehearsals and participate as ensemble members (SATB) and extras in the final performances.​​​​​​​​​​​​

All lessons, rehearsals and performances will be working at baroque pitch (A=415).

  • Alcina - soprano: 2 places Young Professionals’ Program (main cast) + 1 place Studio Artist Program

  • Ruggiero - mezzo-soprano or mezzo countertenor: 1 place Young Professionals’ Program (main cast) + 1 place Studio Artist Program

  • Bradamante - contralto or mezzo-soprano: 2 places Young Professionals’ Program (main cast) + 1 place Studio Artist Program

  • Morgana - soprano: 2 places Young Professionals’ Program (main cast) + 1 place Studio Artist Program

  • Oronte - tenor or mezzo countertenor:  2 places Young Professionals’ Program (main cast) + 1 place Studio Artist Program

  • Melisso - bass-baritone or bass:  2 places Young Professionals’ Program (main cast) + 1 place Studio Artist Program

  • Oberto - soprano or sopranist : 2 places Young Professionals’ Program (main cast) + 1 place Studio Artist Program

Tuition fees are payable in installments and include:

4) FAQ SECTION

- Are accommodation and food included in the tuition fee?

 

Accommodation and food are not included, however, OperUs can provide a list of recommended accommodation options on request. 

- Are there any scholarships?

Unfortunately we are unable to offer scholarships, however tuition fees can be paid in monthly installments from the date of enrollment

- What language will lessons be held in? 

Lessons and rehearsals will be run bilingually (English-Italian) thanks to our fully bilingual staff body. Prior knowledge of the Italian language is therefore not required.

- How many casts are there?

There are two main casts of named roles comprised of Young Professionals’ Program participants. Studio Artists will also perform in the ensemble.

- Will I get to audition for an agent?

 

Thanks to our collaboration with several agencies, certain cast members may be invited to meet and sing for one of them.

- Are there any age limits to apply?

Applications are open to all over-18s and there is no upper age limit. 

- At which stage of my studies/career should I apply for the opera studio?

OperUs believes in measuring applicants by the merit of their performance, without prejudice in favour of particular age groups or educational stages. We welcome applications from current and prospective university and conservatoire students, graduates and early-career professionals. As a general guide, the Young Professionals’ Program is aimed at singers who are prepared and ready to begin their professional career, while the Studio Artists’ Program is aimed at students currently developing their unique voice and technique.

- Which airports are closest?

Trieste is well served by a variety of nearby airports. The closest is Trieste Airport, just a short train ride away (28 minutes ride). Other possibilities include Venice Marco Polo (direct bus to Trieste from outside the airport about 1.5h drive), Venice Treviso, Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Verona. ​
